A Time of Fasting
As we prepare our hearts for Easter, join us in fasting on Thursdays, April 3, 10, and 17. This is a time to set aside distractions, seek the Lord, and reflect on the sacrifice and victory of Jesus. Our cafe will also be open for prayer each Thursday from 12:00 to 1:00 PM.
What is fasting? In the broadest, most generic sense of the word, fasting is denying our flesh to benefit our spirits. It is ignoring the appetites of our flesh to give priority to our spirit. In the Bible, this looks like abstaining from food to direct more attention to prayer and seeking God. Whatever the fast, the fundamental part is seeking God. If we skip meals without also seeking God, we’re simply starving ourselves! The point of a fast is to seek God.
There are many examples of fasting in the scriptures that help guide and shape our fast. Fasting helped people in preparation for God’s work in and through their lives. The Bible shows people fasting in participation, appropriately responding to their circumstances. We also see fasting as a means of formation, a regular spiritual discipline, and a way of exercising oneself to godliness.
Pastor Lucas has provided insight into its biblical purpose, along with practical ways to engage. Take a moment to watch a short video and be encouraged in your fast. And however you choose to fast, let it be a reminder to draw near to God.
